Second-story additions?

March 2006:
On Tuesday, March 28 6:00 PM, a case comes before the Historic Review Board Meeting:

Case #H-04-152. 317 W. Houghton. Don Gaspar Area Historic District. Liliana Connelly-Ferrari,
agent/owner, proposes to construct an approximately 406 sq. ft. 2nd story addition to a
non-contributing toa height of 20' where the maximum allowable height is 14'. An exception is
requested to exceed the maximum allowable height (Section 14-5.2,D,9)

This property is in the Don Diego Neighborhood Association area, as well as in the Don Gaspar Historic District. The area has predominantly one-story houses, though some second-story additions have snuck in in the past. Note that this house is brand-new, about 9 months old. On the above photograph from 2005, the lot is still empty.
There are many in the neighborhood who feel that second-story additions are a creeping blight to the character of this area, and a petition to stop this is circulating.

(2) At the Historic Design Review Board meeting many people came out to air their views on the requested exception. The vast majority were opposed. A petition signed by 27 neighbors, as well as a statement from the Old Santa Fe Association were presented. The Board voted unanimously to deny the request.
